Step 1: Prepare

Before the Appointment:

  • Introduce MedBuddy®: Show your child their new medical friend
  • Create a Story: 'Brave Bear helps doctors help children feel better'
  • Practice Play: Let them hold and explore MedBuddy® at home
  • Positive Language: 'MedBuddy® is coming to help you today!'

Step 2: Attach

For Healthcare Providers:

  1. Clean Hands: Wash hands and sanitize MedBuddy®
  2. Show the Child: 'Look who's here to help today!'
  3. Secure Attachment: Slide MedBuddy® over medical device
  4. Test Fit: Ensure device functions normally
  5. Engage Child: 'Say hello to your MedBuddy®!'

Step 3: Transform

During the Procedure:

  • Focus on MedBuddy®: 'Look at your friend helping you!'
  • Tell Stories: Create adventures with the character
  • Praise Bravery: 'You and MedBuddy® are so brave!'
  • Distraction Technique: Ask about MedBuddy®'s features
  • Celebrate Success: 'Great job helping MedBuddy® help you!'

Device-Specific Instructions

🩹 Syringe Attachments:

  • Slide over syringe barrel, leaving needle access clear
  • Ensure plunger moves freely
  • Character faces child during procedure
  • Remove after use for cleaning

🩺 Stethoscope Covers:

  • Slip over stethoscope chest piece
  • Ensure diaphragm contact isn't blocked
  • Let child 'listen' to MedBuddy®'s heartbeat first
  • Clean between patients

🌡️ Thermometer Attachments:

  • Attach to digital thermometer body
  • Keep sensor tip accessible
  • Make temperature-taking a game
  • Sanitize after each use

Age-Appropriate Techniques

Ages 2-5:

  • Simple character names
  • Basic stories and songs
  • Focus on colors and textures
  • Lots of praise and encouragement

Ages 6-12:

  • Superhero narratives
  • Explain how MedBuddy® helps
  • Involve them in the process
  • Discuss bravery and helping others

Troubleshooting

If Child is Still Anxious:

  • Let them hold MedBuddy® first
  • Practice on a doll or stuffed animal
  • Use breathing exercises with MedBuddy®
  • Allow extra time for comfort
